If you love music and the idea of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together on one stage, Million Dollar Quartet is a musical too good to pass up.
Now playing at New World Stages. Million Dollar Quartet, based on the book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux and directed by Eric Schaeffer, features Eddie Clendening (Elvis Presley), Lance Guest (Johnny Cash), Robert Britton Lyons (Carl Perkins), Eric Stang (Jerry Lee Lewis), Victoria Matlock (Dyanne) and James Moye (Sam Phillips). The talented actors, each of whom made their New York stage debut with the show, play their own instruments and transform into a real rock band every night.
The story, based on actual events, takes place on December 4, 1956 when a twist of fate brings Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together. The place is the Sun Records' storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the "Father of Rock add Roll," who discovered them all. On that day, the four young musicians united for the only time in their careers. The result was an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time. The musical captures the infectious spirit, freewheeling excitement and thrilling sounds of a singular moment when four of the music industry's most extraordinary talents, all in their creative prime, came together for one of the most memorable nights in music history.
When Million Dollar Quartet opened last year, it opened to rave reviews from critics. The Tony and Outer Critics Circle award winning musical also received Tony nominations for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical, a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue and three Drama League nominations, including Distinguished Production of a Musical and two Distinguished Performance nominations.
Million Dollar Quartet features a treasure trove of the greatest rock and roll, gospel, R & B and country hits from these musicians, including’ “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” "Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line" and “Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin’ On.”
