Room Divider for Sale in Los Angeles, CA

This unique room divider is not only a wonderful example of how reclaimed materials can be given a new life thanks to inspired design, it also tells a poignant and compelling historical story. It was created by linking together four sheets of Pierced Steel Planking (PSP), also known as Marsden Matting, which had proved indispensable to the US Army during the World War II Normandy Landings. Sheets of PSP, which had originally been manufactured in the US, were transported to France by the Allies where they were used to create temporary run-ways and to bring army tanks safely ashore. Once the war ended, they were abandonned by the departing US forces. When Paris photographer Remi Loca discovered several sheets of forgotten PSP gently rusting in a Normandy village two years ago, he was struck by their raw industrial beauty and immediately saw their design potential. After straightening out the metal sheets and polishing them to remove most of the rust without destroying the subtle patina the steel had developed over the last 50 years, he added plexiglass discs with his black and white photographs taken in Paris. The reverse sides were sculpted by Paris artist Marc Gassier, adding fascinating textural detail to the mysterious, whimsical silhouetted figures of Remi Loca's photographs. In 2008, Loca brought the room divider to Los Angeles, bringing the reclaimed materials home to America over half a century after they helped Allied troops liberate his country from Nazi occupation.
