There is a happy atmosphere as soon as you walk in to Wilson Family Chiropractic. The staff are smiling and cheerful, soothing music plays through speakers and a feeling of relaxation permeates the building.
This environment, just as Andrea Wilson, is there to make patients feel better. “A lot of times, patients are a little nervous,” said Andrea Wilson, 37-year-old owner of Wilson Family Chiropractic. “They’re in a lot of pain, and sometimes it’s their last resort. It’s extremely rewarding to see patients feel better and become more active. Not a day goes by that I don’t just love what I do.”
Chiropractic medicine wasn’t Wilson’s first choice, but after seeing the difference it can make first-hand, she modified her career path.
Special care outside of the chiropractor’s office is important to maintaining joint health and mobility. Here are some tips from Andrea Wilson to keep you moving, pain free.
Dr. Andrea Wilson adjusts a patient’s back in her practice at 133 W. Water St.
“I had all intention of going to medical school,” Wilson said. “I had already taken the MCAT and applied to medical schools. I met my husband, and he was seeing a chiropractor, so I went with him on the visit and was very interested in what was going on. I started being treated myself for a neck injury I received in high school, and it made a huge difference for me. I knew it was definitely what I was meant to do.”
Wilson and her husband moved to Kerrville from Dallas in fall 1999. She said they fell in love with the Hill Country after visiting family in the area. Both she and her husband had grown up in smaller towns, so the shift of Kerrville was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Dallas.
They opened the business in February 2000 and moved to their new location at 133 W. Water St. about four months ago. For Wilson, the move to the new, 5,000-square-foot building allows she and her staff to provide a more well-rounded service to her patients.
“It’s important to teach patients how to take care of themselves as well,” Wilson said. “A lot of times that’s showing them how to exercise, increase activity in their lives and how to, nutritionally, make better choices. If I can’t get the patient to stretch or exercise, we don’t make as much improvement.”
The service Wilson provides is more than just a procedure, plying bones and muscles to fit correctly. She said it’s about “quality of life.”
“I know, for me, good health is such a blessing,” she said, “and just to be able to see patients do activities they weren’t able to do before — enjoying life and feeling good — is why I want to help people.”
The conditions her patients struggle with are something Andrea Wilson has a personal understanding of.
“Coming back from a seminar in Dallas, we got in a bad car accident and dropped over a bridge,” Keith Wilson said. “Dr. Wilson broke her back and shattered her right heel. She was in the hospital for three months. Of the 50 or 60 people on that floor, she was the only one that wasn’t paralyzed; that’s how badly she was hurt.”
It took at least nine surgeries and an 18-month recovery period before Andrea Wilson was back to normal. Keith said her experiences are one of the reasons she’s so passionate about helping people. “She’s a very driven and compassionate person,” he said. “Always has been. But I don’t see how it could not be a motivating factor. If there’s anyone that can understand the pain her patients are in, it’s her.”
Andrea Wilson treats her family with the same kind of compassion she treats her patients.
“She takes time out of her schedule,” Keith Wilson said. “She works half days on Fridays to be with the kids. She went recently on a field trip to the zoo with them.”
Along with her family, Andrea Wilson attributes her success to her staff.
“I have a great husband and supportive family,” she said. “My staff is key to being successful. You have to have the customer service aspect, and I feel everyone here has that.”
