Best Jewelry at Baublit’s Jewelers

Baublit’s Jewelers was started in 1970 on Earl Garrett Street by Philipe Baublit, and in 1996 it moved to its current location on Water Street. The move wasn’t far, just down the block, and the store still maintains a sense of history.

The walls of the shop are adorned with historic photos of Kerrville and the downtown area, including pictures of the long-gone St. Charles Hotel, which was on the site of the Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital, and the grand Bluebonnet Hotel, which sat in what is now the parking lot between the Schreiner One building and Bank of America.

But the history doesn’t stop there. Inside the glass cases, alongside the golden rings and shiny gems, Baublit has a display of antique pocket watches. Some of the gold plated watches date back more than 100 years, and all are in working condition.

Baublit says he sells only a couple a year but carries them because of the sentimental value.

“I miss that,” he said of men carrying classic pocket watches. “That’s my passion.”

History plays out in another way inside the small shop next to the 85-year-old Arcadia Theater through generations of customers who, despite a wait that can be as much as four weeks, keep coming back.

“We’re doing things now for kids that we used to do for their parents,” Baublit said.

He said whether it’s repairing a watch or making a custom piece of jewelry for a customer, their job is coming up with something that the customer will be happy with years after they’ve left the store. That is their top job.

He said they also spend time helping people choose just the right piece of jewelry for those important decisions such as an engagement ring or mother’s ring.

“We want it to be something you still like looking at five years from now. As opposed to making a great pizza,” Baublit said.

Dayton Baublit was born in California, but his grandparents and his mother were from Kerrville. He said he spent every summer for years visiting his grandparents in the Hill County, and one day, after getting tired of smog obscuring the view, he picked up and moved his family.

“And we never looked back,” Baublit said. He worked for the Peterson Auto shop for years and was the manager of the parts department when he got his “internship” with his father, which lasted only a few months before he started running the shop.
