In 1995, from their family home, Roscoe & Mary Coldren founded Coldren Convalescent Rest Home in Mifflintown, Eleven years later, with a name changes to Brookline, their son Clifford R. Coldren purchased the family business and became the administrator, developing the 24 bed facility in to a 128-bed, multi-level care community. Seeing the need to offer to older adults living in Centre Country a sensible alternative to living alone in and maintaining a large home, Mr.Coldren formed Brookline Associates.

In 1983, plans for a personal care facility, the Inn, were underway. The accommodations for 70 guests include six independent-living apartments. Four years later, an additional 27 apartments were constructed and joined with the original six to form what is now Windsong Apartments. Several months later, Coldren Associates was formed and the Fairways, a 120-bed, long-term facility opened its doors the very next year. The facility provides 24-hour nursing care and has grown to include rehabilitation services and sub acute care accommodations, with the completion of PineCastle in 2003, Brookline’s personal care offerings had grown to include private suites with greater independents on secure surroundings, In 2004 The terrace began offering specialized personal care services for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

To this day, Mr. Coldren’s commitment to excellence and quality care remains the guiding charter in the growth and success of Brookline. The key to this success lies in the ability to satisfy the needs of residents for security, independence, trust and sense of personal self-worth, and is the goal of each of its more than 200 employees.

There are currently 12 hospice providers serving patients in middle Georgia - 10 are “For-Profit” and 2 are "Non-Profit" organizations.

"FOR-PROFIT" HOSPICE

Peter Drucker, financial management guru and author of author of Managing the nonprofit Organization, writes that the key difference between Non-Profit organizations and For-Profit businesses is “the financial bottom line.”
For the “For-Profit" Hospice - after expenses, where do their surplus monies go? Profits go to the private owners) or stock holders / shareholders - anticipating a return on their money.
The Journal of American Medicine recently published an article regarding comparisons between "No-Profit" hospices nothing both their growth in the U.S and information regarding patient care:
- "During the past 10 years, the for-Profit hospice sector has increased substantially. From 2000 to 2007, the number of for-profit hospices more than doubted from 725 to 1660, while the number of non-profit hospices remained the same - 1193 in 2000 and 1205 in 2007. Overall, for-profit hospices have significantly higher profit margins than the non profit hospices…..
- Conclusion: Compared with non-profit hospice agencies, for-profit hospice agencies had a higher percentage of patients with diagnoses associated with lower-skilled needs and longer lengths of stay."

"NON-PROFIT" HOSPICE

Here’s Wikipedia's definition of a "Non-Profit" “A non-profit organization is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals….”
For the "Non-Profit Hospice- after serving a hospice patient and receiving reimbursement from Medicare / Medicaid or their insurance company, any money that is a surplus is used to provide additional outreach services that will help and benefit the local community.
Most “Non-Profit” hospices take patients that require more complex care and typically more costly to care for compared to "For-Profit" hospices. Journal of American Medicine, February 2.2011-Vol 305, No.5
